About this artwork

Degas was a master at portraying dancers during performances, practice sessions, backstage waits, or, like in this case, during their casual downtime. He had a talent for picking non-traditional groupings, like dancers having a chat in a corner of the rehearsal room. You can see a part of a ballet skirt reflected in the mirror behind them. Degas was known for revising his designs and you can see the same figure arrangements in some of his earlier pastels. For this piece, he used oil paint to outline and highlight certain details, applied colours using broad brush strokes, and even used his fingers, which left fingerprints on the paint surface. He created more than 1500 ballet-related images.

About the artist

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French Impressionist artist well known for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings of ballet dancers, race horses, and other scenes of modern life. He was a master of the use of pastels and is particularly identified with the subject of the dance. Degas also explored the expressive potential of photography, and was an early adopter of the medium. He was a close friend of many Impressionist painters, including Mary Cassatt and Édouard Manet.
