About this artwork

Degas's later work is represented on a comparatively small canvas, and some of the ballet dancers' poses hark back to his earlier pieces from the 1870s. Here we see a troupe of ballet dancers on stage, getting ready for the performance that's about to start. They're doing their warm ups, with one dancer even bending over to fix her shoe. The dancers are not portrayed as individuals, but as anonymous remnants of a scene he once witnessed. The bold, vibrant colours used are out-of-the-world and seem to reflect the surreal glow of the theater's gas lights. The large stage area also features pools of abstract shadow. It's obvious that by the late 1890s, Degas' focus had shifted from realism, a stark contrast to his earlier years. His application of the oil paint is incredibly subtle, almost giving the impression of gouache.

About the artist

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French Impressionist artist well known for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings of ballet dancers, race horses, and other scenes of modern life. He was a master of the use of pastels and is particularly identified with the subject of the dance. Degas also explored the expressive potential of photography, and was an early adopter of the medium. He was a close friend of many Impressionist painters, including Mary Cassatt and Édouard Manet.
