About this artwork

Throughout his career, Edgar Degas refined his drawing skills and explored various methods of artistic expression. In this particular piece, the artist skillfully portrays the rider's relaxed yet vigilant posture on his stationary horse using a few distinct lines. The interrupted contour characterised by concise strokes, the simplified representation of the horse's body, and the thin paper material all hint at the drawing being traced, a technique Degas often advocated for aspiring artists. This reproduction is painstakingly color-matched to the original and has received approval from the Courtauld Gallery. Every purchase contributes to the Courtauld's ongoing work.

About the artist

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French Impressionist artist well known for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings of ballet dancers, race horses, and other scenes of modern life. He was a master of the use of pastels and is particularly identified with the subject of the dance. Degas also explored the expressive potential of photography, and was an early adopter of the medium. He was a close friend of many Impressionist painters, including Mary Cassatt and Édouard Manet.
