About this artwork

Edgar Degas was a well known French Impressionist painter from the 19th century, best known for his pastel sketches and oil paintings. Initially, Degas began his artistic journey as a history painter, but in his early thirties, he chose a new path, aiming to capture fleeting instances of modern life. He was often drawn to scenes at the racecourse, as it allowed him to portray the classic subject of horses in a contemporary setting. In 1866, he created the artwork 'The Parade,' which features a high-strung thoroughbred horse, signifying the beginning of a race.
