About this artwork

Egon Schiele, a well known Austrian artist known for his figurative works, married with his wife, Edith Harms, in 1914. After they got hitched, there was a noticeable shift in Schiele's artwork. His usually dark and gloomy figurative paintings began to take a more joyful tone, often featuring Harms. One such piece is 'Edith Schiele in Striped Dress Seated', where Schiele beautifully depicted his wife donned in a striped dress, gazing innocently at the viewer.

About the artist

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian Expressionist painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by the works of Gustav Klimt and Vincent van Gogh, and his works often featured emotionally charged figures in expressive poses. Schiele was known for his raw and provocative depictions of the human form, and his works were often considered controversial. He was also a mentor to the young Oskar Kokoschka. Schiele died at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu.
