About this artwork

'Egon Schiele, an early 20th-century artist known for his figurative works, created 'Portrait of a Woman'. He portrayed the woman in profile, and her outfit in black and white starkly contrasts with her red lips and hair, making her beauty even more striking. Instead of using a pencil, Schiele opted for charcoal for this drawing, as it allowed for more texture experimentation.

About the artist

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian Expressionist painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by the works of Gustav Klimt and Vincent van Gogh, and his works often featured emotionally charged figures in expressive poses. Schiele was known for his raw and provocative depictions of the human form, and his works were often considered controversial. He was also a mentor to the young Oskar Kokoschka. Schiele died at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu.
