About this artwork

In 1910, Egon Schiele, a prominent Austrian figure painter, created a piece titled 'Self Portrait with Hands on Chest'. The painting showcases him with messy hair and large hands resting on his chest. Schiele chose to keep his shirt white, while he painted his face and hands in various tones of brown and orange. This was a sharp contrast to the purple hues he used for his hair. Schiele purposefully exaggerated the size of his hands to introduce distortion in the composition. Moreover, he used a vivid and passionate range of colors to mirror his intricate personality.

About the artist

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian Expressionist painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by the works of Gustav Klimt and Vincent van Gogh, and his works often featured emotionally charged figures in expressive poses. Schiele was known for his raw and provocative depictions of the human form, and his works were often considered controversial. He was also a mentor to the young Oskar Kokoschka. Schiele died at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu.
