About this artwork

Back in 1910, Egon Schiele, a famous Austrian artist known for his figurative works, created a 'Self Portrait'. In this artwork, he portrays himself with messy hair, a thin neck, and staring straight into the viewer's eyes. Schiele used minimal lines to draw the chest and painted the sleeves in hues of brown and orange, similar to the colors used for his skin. Contrary to his more complex and sensuous female depictions, Schiele doesn't give away too much about his own persona in this portrait.

About the artist

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian Expressionist painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by the works of Gustav Klimt and Vincent van Gogh, and his works often featured emotionally charged figures in expressive poses. Schiele was known for his raw and provocative depictions of the human form, and his works were often considered controversial. He was also a mentor to the young Oskar Kokoschka. Schiele died at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu.
