About this artwork

Back in 1910, Egon Schiele, a well-known Austrian artist, created a piece called 'Self Portrait with White Shirt'. The artwork portrayed him with messy hair, sporting an oversised white shirt and his hands tightly held at his waist. Schiele decided to leave the shirt white, but he painted his hands, legs, and face in hues of browns and oranges, which were similar to the colors he used for his hair. Schiele's unique composition and vibrant color scheme were a reflection of his intricate personality.

About the artist

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian Expressionist painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by the works of Gustav Klimt and Vincent van Gogh, and his works often featured emotionally charged figures in expressive poses. Schiele was known for his raw and provocative depictions of the human form, and his works were often considered controversial. He was also a mentor to the young Oskar Kokoschka. Schiele died at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu.
