About this artwork

Egon Schiele was an influential figurative painter from Austria during the 20th century. Early on in his career, he was guided by another successful Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt. Klimt took a special liking to Schiele, purchasing his artwork and introducing him to potential sponsors. Klimt's work often featured exquisitely ornate figures and patterns. This influence can be spotted in Schiele’s piece 'Standing Girl', where the partially nude female figure is holding up a dress with a checkered pattern. This piece was done in charcoal and tempera painting mediums.

About the artist

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian Expressionist painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by the works of Gustav Klimt and Vincent van Gogh, and his works often featured emotionally charged figures in expressive poses. Schiele was known for his raw and provocative depictions of the human form, and his works were often considered controversial. He was also a mentor to the young Oskar Kokoschka. Schiele died at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu.
