About this artwork

Back in 1914, the Austrian painter known for his figurative work, Egon Schiele, married with Edith Harms. Over the next few years, Schiele created several portraits of his wife. One of these was 'The Artist's Wife', where Harms is seen sitting on the floor, her cheek resting on her left knee. She's wearing a bright green top that stands out against her fiery red hair. This provocative style seen in the portrait was a common thread in Schiele's work, mirroring the artistic style of his mentor and fellow Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt.

About the artist

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian Expressionist painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by the works of Gustav Klimt and Vincent van Gogh, and his works often featured emotionally charged figures in expressive poses. Schiele was known for his raw and provocative depictions of the human form, and his works were often considered controversial. He was also a mentor to the young Oskar Kokoschka. Schiele died at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu.
