About this artwork

Egon Schiele was a well known Austrian artist known for his figurative art. He constantly evolved his drawing style throughout his career, as he sought the ultimate representation of the female figure. In 1914, Schiele created a piece named 'Woman Undressing'. It depicts a semi-nude woman with red hair. In a unique style, Schiele added tiny vertical strokes over the main outlines of the woman's body in an attempt to give it a 3D look and enhance the tonal quality. He used a mix of charcoal, watercolour, and opaque white on paper to bring this artwork to life.

About the artist

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian Expressionist painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by the works of Gustav Klimt and Vincent van Gogh, and his works often featured emotionally charged figures in expressive poses. Schiele was known for his raw and provocative depictions of the human form, and his works were often considered controversial. He was also a mentor to the young Oskar Kokoschka. Schiele died at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu.
