About the artist

Born in Newburgh, NY, on May 31, 1923, Ellsworth Kelly was a pioneering figure in U.S. minimalist art, famous for his unique, single-colour "shaped" canvases that defied traditional geometry. His creations spanned sculptures and prints, studying at Pratt Institute and School of the Museum of Fine Arts. His life ended on December 27, 2015, in Spencertown, NY, leaving a legacy encapsulated in his mantra that "The negative is as important as the positive."

Kelly visited numerous European artists' studios, such as Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, and Alexander Calder. He spent substantial time painting in southern France, where his art transformed from representational to refined abstraction.

With his minimalist works, he found art's essence in nature while also establishing an abstract aesthetic through the use of sparse shapes and rich colours.
