About this artwork

Félix Vallotton, a Swiss artist, drew inspiration from a range of artists, shaping his diverse style. He was profoundly influenced by Hans Holbein the Younger, a German-Swiss artist and printmaker known for his Northern Renaissance style, and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, a French Neoclassical painter. Towards the twilight of his career, Vallotton felt a deeper connection to French artists and spent a large chunk of his time journeying through the Normandy region of France. One of his creations, 'Digue de Honfleur' (The Embankment of Honfleur), an oil painting from 1915, portrays the estuary where the Seine river merges with the English Channel. The striking orange river bank contrasts sharply with the vibrant blue water, highlighting the importance of the estuary.

About the artist

Born on December 28, 1865 in Lausanne, Switzerland, Félix Vallotton was an artist of unique originality, despite not achieving the celebrity of his pioneering contemporaries. He carved a distinctive path through an array of artistic expressions, including portraits, satirical prints, interior narratives, landscapes, and still lifes.

His early talent in printmaking attracted the attention of artists Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, leading to his inclusion in the Nabis group. Although he didn't quite fit in with the Nabis, it ushered him into a vibrant literary and bohemian circle. Through these relationships, Vallotton found a distinctive path, gaining prominence via his innovative satirical woodcuts for progressive left-wing publications.

Vallotton's journey didn't stop at printmaking. As his career matured, he shifted focus towards painting, applying his printmaking techniques to his works. His unique blend of Realism and Symbolism resulted in pieces that emanated an uncanny psychological tension. Vallotton's death occurred in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Paris, France on December 29, 1925, but his legacy persists in his compelling body of work.
