About this artwork

Frida Kahlo is known as a Mexican surrealist artist who's gained recognition through her personal paintings. She drew inspiration from her country's cultural traditions and used her work to delve into topics such as identity, postcolonialism, gender, and societal classes in Mexico. In 1937, she painted 'Self-Portrait Dedicated to Leon Trotsky' to remember her short-lived relationship with the exiled Russian revolutionary leader, Leon Trotsky. In this piece, Kahlo is seen wearing a long, ornately embroidered skirt, a fringed shawl, and delicate gold accessories. Her attire in the painting is inspired by the unique dress styles of the Tehuantepec women from southwest Mexico.
