About this artwork

Otho was a bay colt that was bred and initially owned by the Hon. Richard Vernon, one of the founding members of the Jockey Club. Otho only had a bit of success on the racetrack until his final racing year in 1767, when he snagged a few victories. It's assumed that this portrait of him with a jockey, standing next to one of the rubbing-down houses at Newmarket, was commissioned to honor these wins. The delicate atmospheric effects in the picture capture the intensity of racing, with the looming storm clouds suggesting that the sunny situation the horse and rider find themselves in might be short-lived.
