About this artwork

Georgia O'Keeffe played a crucial role in the rise of American modern art and is most recognised for her enchanting paintings that capture the beauty of nature. Around the mid-1920s, O'Keeffe began to experiment with semi-abstract depictions of natural elements and embarked on a series of sunflower paintings. She painted 'Sunflower New Mexico' while she was stationed in the Southwest region of America, New Mexico. O'Keeffe portrayed the sunflower against a vibrant blue backdrop and amplified the yellow hues of the flower to echo the region's warm climate.

About the artist

Born on November 15, 1887, and died on March 6, 1986, Georgia Totto O'Keeffe was a well known American artist. She was celebrated for her magnified depictions of flowers, the towering skyscrapers of New York, and the vast landscapes of New Mexico. Known as the "Mother of American modernism", O'Keeffe truly left her mark in the world of art.
