About this artwork

Gerda Wegner, a 19th-century artist from Denmark, was famous for her fashion illustrations and boundary-pushing paintings that explored love and gender. In the early 1920s, she created a highly stylised piece called 'Three Young Women in Hats.' This painting, which features three chic women and a petite dog, showcases Wegner's affinity for the emerging Art Deco movement.

About the artist

Born on March 15, 1886, in Hammelev, Denmark, Gerda Marie Fredrikke Gottlieb, known as Gerda Wegener, was a noteworthy Danish artist acclaimed for her forward-thinking feminist artwork. Her work, steeped in Art Deco aesthetics, was groundbreaking as it grappled with sexuality, identity, and gender. Contrary to the norm of the male gaze in art history, Wegener chose to celebrate women in her paintings, showcasing them as powerful figures.

Wegener moved to Copenhagen to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where she met Einar Wegener, her future husband and muse. Einar would go on to transition genders, becoming Lili Elbe, one of the earliest documented transitions. The pair married in 1904 and took up residence in Paris in 1912. Wegener's portraits of Elbe, along with her sensual illustrations and glass mosaics earned her high praise and wealthy Parisian patrons. She bagged two golds and a bronze at the 1925 World's Fair for her work.

After Elbe died in 1931, Wegener found it difficult to make ends meet and relocated back to Denmark. She died in Frederiksberg, Denmark, on July 28, 1940, at 54 years old.
