About the artist

Immigrating from Albania in 1923, Gjon Mili (1904-1984) attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for electrical engineering. Post-graduation in 1927, Mili joined Westinghouse as a lighting research engineer. Collaborating with Harold Edgerton at MIT, he innovated tungsten filament lights for colour photography and breakthroughs in stroboscopic and stop-action images, drawing Life magazine's attention. He created films, such as Jamming the Blues and Homage to Picasso, and taught at various colleges.

Known for his portrayal of movement in photography, Mili's engineering of photographic lighting tools in the 1930s transformed the way motion was depicted. His abundant motion photographs, often featured in Life magazine, expanded postwar society's understanding of human kinetics. Mili's dynamic fashion and advertising images showcased his ability to creatively apply his findings without overshadowing the image with photographic theatrics.
