About this artwork

Andy Warhol's fascination with shoes dates back to the early 1950s. His unique, blotted line sketches of shoes, especially those with high heels, formed a significant part of his career, both as a commercial and a fine artist. He created illustrations of shoes for entities like I. Miller and Glamour magazine, often naming the shoes after famous personalities like Julie Andrews, Kate Smith, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, while cowboy boots bore the names of Elvis Presley and James Dean. His shoe designs ranged from highly stylised to playful, but always retained a sense of elegance. In 1955, Warhol came out with A la Recherche du Shoe Perdu, a book donned with imaginative shoe sketches. Fast forward to 1980, and Warhol was keen to revisit one of his beloved subjects. It was then that he created his Diamond Dust Shoes, using particles of crushed glass to create a sparkling powder effect. He managed to meld some of his favorite themes into the Diamond Dust Shoe paintings - the glitz and glam of movie stars, high fashion, and wealth. The Diamond Dust Shoe paintings surfaced just as the disco, lamé, and stiletto trends took center stage in Studio 54, fascinating the upscale Manhattan crowd. Warhol, a key figure in the New York club scene since the early 60s, once again managed to mirror the era he was living in through his art.
