About this artwork

Austrian artist Gustav Klimt created 'Garden Path with Hens' in 1916 when he was residing near the small town of Unterach, located on the southern edge of Lake Attersee in Austria. The canvas is adorned on both sides with bushes brimming with red, purple, and yellow floral blossoms. The method in which these flowers blend with each other provides structure and patterns to the artwork. Contrasting with the ornamental backdrop, Klimt has depicted two hens walking along the stone path in a very realistic style.

About the artist

Gustav Klimt (14 July 1862 – 6 February 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. His primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. Klimt's work was also influenced by Japanese art and its methods. He was a master of line and ornamental design, and his paintings often featured gold leaf. Klimt's personal life was often turbulent, and he suffered from severe depression in his later years.
