About this artwork

Henri Matisse was a prolific artist who created over a dozen illustrated books, or "livre d'artiste", that combined art and text in his lifetime. In 1943, he spent a considerable amount of time working on a series of linocuts. These were printed using black ink on a kind of paper called wove paper, and they were meant to accompany a play by Henry de Montherlant titled 'Pasiphae'. Within this series, there was a particular print called 'Basket full of Begonias'. As the name suggests, it portrayed a basket brimming with tropical flowers, specifically Begonias.

About the artist

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. He was a leader of the Fauvism movement, which emphasised strong colours and bold, expressive brushstrokes. Matisse was also heavily influenced by the Post-Impressionists, particularly Paul Cézanne. He was known for his use of bright colours and his ability to capture the essence of a scene in a single image. Matisse was also a sculptor, printmaker, and draughtsman. He was married twice and had three children.
