About this artwork

Tériade, the publisher of the arts magazine Verve, also commissioned Jazz. The oldest cover featured here, from Verve's 1937 issue, showcases two black figures in an energetic dance against a green backdrop dotted with white stars. The magazine's title, "VERVE", is creatively represented by the scattered orange letters "VE" and "R" on a purple setting.Original: The artwork was executed using gouache découpée on paper and then mounted on a canvas that measures 38.1 x 56.8 cm.

About the artist

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. He was a leader of the Fauvism movement, which emphasised strong colours and bold, expressive brushstrokes. Matisse was also heavily influenced by the Post-Impressionists, particularly Paul Cézanne. He was known for his use of bright colours and his ability to capture the essence of a scene in a single image. Matisse was also a sculptor, printmaker, and draughtsman. He was married twice and had three children.
