About this artwork

In this artwork, the Egyptian-themed curtain actually belonged to Matisse. Some say the applique designs partially sparked his interest in creating cut paper collages. Matisse had a thing for painting window scenes, as he was pretty keen on the blend of interior and exterior perspectives.

About the artist

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. He was a leader of the Fauvism movement, which emphasised strong colours and bold, expressive brushstrokes. Matisse was also heavily influenced by the Post-Impressionists, particularly Paul Cézanne. He was known for his use of bright colours and his ability to capture the essence of a scene in a single image. Matisse was also a sculptor, printmaker, and draughtsman. He was married twice and had three children.
