About this artwork

'Henri Matisse's art book 'Jazz' includes a piece titled 'The Lagoon: Maquette for Plate XVII', thanks to the publishing work of Elf Tériade. The print draws inspiration from the lush greenery Matisse encountered on his visits to Tahiti, which is the biggest island in French Polynesia. In describing the lagoon pieces to his nurse, Lydia Delectorskaya, Matisse referred to them as “simply the shimmering colours of the tropics, with animals or undulating forms, evocations of calm waters”.The original artwork was produced using gouache on paper, which was then cut and pasted onto a canvas measuring 44 x 66.3 cm.

About the artist

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. He was a leader of the Fauvism movement, which emphasised strong colours and bold, expressive brushstrokes. Matisse was also heavily influenced by the Post-Impressionists, particularly Paul Cézanne. He was known for his use of bright colours and his ability to capture the essence of a scene in a single image. Matisse was also a sculptor, printmaker, and draughtsman. He was married twice and had three children.
