About this artwork

This unique design features a solo white alga shape dotted with playful green squares. According to Olivier Berggruen, a Matisse historian and son of his agent, these cut-outs are the true representation of Matisse's artistic vision. He believes that Matisse had a straightforward philosophy about art - it's supposed to bring us joy and improve our life quality.Just to give you an idea about its original form, it was a gouache on paper, cut and pasted, and finally mounted on a canvas measuring 52.5 x 40.5 cm.

About the artist

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. He was a leader of the Fauvism movement, which emphasised strong colours and bold, expressive brushstrokes. Matisse was also heavily influenced by the Post-Impressionists, particularly Paul Cézanne. He was known for his use of bright colours and his ability to capture the essence of a scene in a single image. Matisse was also a sculptor, printmaker, and draughtsman. He was married twice and had three children.
