About this artwork

Henri Matisse made trips to Tangiers, Morocco in 1912 and 1913 and developed a fascination with Islamic Art. He created a Moroccan triptych during his stay in Tangier, with 'Window at Tangier' serving as the first segment. The striking colours and the lack of depth in the perspective of his work can be attributed to Matisse's engagement with Fauvism. This art movement in the early 20th century encouraged modern artists to highlight the artistic aspects of their work and often utilised bold, non-realistic colours, often applied straight from the tube.

About the artist

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. He was a leader of the Fauvism movement, which emphasised strong colours and bold, expressive brushstrokes. Matisse was also heavily influenced by the Post-Impressionists, particularly Paul Cézanne. He was known for his use of bright colours and his ability to capture the essence of a scene in a single image. Matisse was also a sculptor, printmaker, and draughtsman. He was married twice and had three children.
