About this artwork

This vibrant woodblock print comes from the 1920-22 version of Honzo Zufu, a work by Iwasaki Tsunemasa. Born in 1786 and passing in 1842, Tsunemasa wasn't just a run-of-the-mill botanist. He was also a zoologist, entomologist, and a samurai serving the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan. Tsunemasa had quite a worldly view for his time, even engaging with the German Botanist, von Siebold, during a meeting in Edo in 1826.

About the artist

Kan-en, also known as Iwasaki Tsunemasa (1786–1842), was more than a samurai serving the Tokugawa shogunate. He was also a notable Japanese botanist, zoologist, and entomologist.

Samurais weren't merely warriors, but individuals with refined artistic abilities.

Kan-en's art, particularly his woodblock prints of plants and animals, brilliantly showcase Japanese culture. They were inspired by the Edo Period (1603-1868), a time of peace, stability, and artistic innovation in Japanese history. This era, characterised by techniques like coloured wood-block printing, profoundly influences the Arboretum’s Japanese Garden.

In the early 19th century, Kan-en created a beautiful, scientifically accurate collection of plant prints. These prints later became a set of books titled “Honzō Zufu” (“Illustrated Manual of Medicinal Plants”), published between 1916 and 1922.
