About this artwork

Scottish artist Jack Vettriano, who learned to paint all by himself, is a key player in Britain's modern art world. In 1997, the Bluebird Gastrodrome, a bar and restaurant housed in an expansive Art Deco structure in London's posh Chelsea district, asked Vettriano to create a number of art pieces for them. This building was used as a garage by the Bluebird Motor Company back in the 1920s, which had connections to Sir Malcolm Campbell, a British racing driver who set world speed records in his 'bluebird' automobiles. Vettriano's response was 'Pendine Beach', a grand oil painting that showcases Campbell's blue race car. The painting also features a handful of officials on the Pendine Sands in Wales, the site of the 1922 Welsh TT motor cycle race.

About the artist

Jack Vettriano , born Jack Hoggan on 17 November 1951 in Methil, Fife, Scotland, is a self-taught painter and printmaker. His work is often associated with the "Lowland School" of painting, a style of figurative painting that emerged in the 1980s. His work is heavily influenced by the film noir genre, and his paintings often feature solitary figures in dark, moody settings. Vettriano has had a successful career, with his work being exhibited in galleries around the world.
