About this artwork

Jan van Huysum was a resident of Amsterdam, a city that was well known for its scientific discoveries, particularly in the field of horticulture, during the 18th century. His rendering of a floral arrangement features more than 30 distinct flower species, including vibrant roses, peonies, and apple blossoms. He also incorporated exotic fruits like grapes into the bouquet. The meticulous arrangement of the bouquet showcases van Huysum's extensive knowledge and comprehension of plant specimens, which gained him immense popularity as a still life artist in the Dutch Republic. The colours in this print are an exact match to the original and have received approval from the National Gallery. The museum benefits from each purchase of this print.

About the artist

Jan van Huysum was a well known still life painter that made a name for himself in the Northern Netherlands between the 17th and early 18th centuries, from 1682 until his death in 1749. He gained international fame in his lifetime, largely due to his expertise in painting flower still lifes, although he occasionally ventured into landscapes.

Over time, his style evolved from a focused design seen in his early works to more intricate and elaborate compositions, with his piece "Flowers in a Terracotta Vase" being a prime example of the later style with its light backdrop and surplus of detail.

Born and raised in Amsterdam, his art training came from his father, a still life painter himself, with his first recorded work dating back to 1706. To draw inspiration for his flower paintings, van Huysum frequently visited horticultural hotspots like Haarlem to sketch rare and exotic flowers.

In his lifetime, his work fetched prices of up to 2,000 guilders and attracted the likes of the Duc d’Orléans, William VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, and Sir Robert Walpole amongst his patrons.
