About this artwork

Paul Cezanne, a French Post-Impressionist, was known for his ground-breaking Impressionist style. Artists like Picasso were inspired by him to start Cubism. Cezanne was a fan of repetitive, investigative brushwork and colour planes to create intricate artwork. In his last years, Cezanne found himself painting the same items - a green vase, a rum bottle, a ginger pot, and some apples - repeatedly. He wasn't particularly interested in the objects. Instead, he was all about playing with shape, colour, and light through them.

About the artist

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. His often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. He was a master of still life, landscape and portraiture. Cézanne's work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, composition and draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the old masters, and his exploration of geometric simplification and optical phenomena inspired the Cubists.
