About this artwork

Jasper Johns is a well-known American artist, famed for his work in painting, sculpting, and printmaking. His artwork is predominantly linked with the styles of abstract expressionism and pop art. Between 1954 and 1955, Johns came up with 'Flag', a canvas piece motivated by the U.S flag, created using encaustic painting and newsprint collage. This masterpiece was made a couple of years after he left the US military.

About the artist

Jasper Johns (born May 15, 1930 - present) is an American painter and sculptor who is considered one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century. He is associated with the Pop Art movement and is known for his use of everyday objects and materials in his works. Johns was born in Augusta, Georgia and raised in South Carolina. He studied at the University of South Carolina and the Parsons School of Design in New York. His works are often characterised by their use of bright colours and bold shapes. Johns has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Arts in 1990.
