About this artwork

Jean-Michel Basquiat's 'King Zulu' presents four key figures from jazz, enveloped in a bluesy, dreamlike space that mirrors the soulful tunes of blues music. The iconic Louis Armstrong is placed at the heart of the canvas, a nod to his role as King of the Zulus during the 1949 New Orleans Carnival parade.Though exaggerated blackface was a common tradition at these parades, Basquiat's choice to situate Armstrong in the middle of the artwork implies a certain ambiguity in his feelings towards this practice.

About the artist

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. He rose to prominence in the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionist movement, and his work focused on social commentary and the exploration of identity. Basquiat was heavily influenced by the New York City street culture of the time, and his work often featured graffiti-like imagery. He was also known for his collaborations with fellow artist Andy Warhol. Basquiat's life was tragically cut short at the age of 27 due to a drug overdose.
