About this artwork

Jean-Michel Basquiat, though he came from a middle-class family and carved out a niche for himself in the rich field of art, still faced racial discrimination all his life. In his 1984 'Self Portrait', Basquiat decided to display this double-sided aspect of his identity. He cleverly used colour to achieve this, illustrating a black figure on a white backdrop, and contrasting bright red paint patches with brushstrokes of calm blue hues.

About the artist

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. He rose to prominence in the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionist movement, and his work focused on social commentary and the exploration of identity. Basquiat was heavily influenced by the New York City street culture of the time, and his work often featured graffiti-like imagery. He was also known for his collaborations with fellow artist Andy Warhol. Basquiat's life was tragically cut short at the age of 27 due to a drug overdose.
