About this artwork

An offset litho print issued by the Dallas Museum of Art back in 2010. Jim Dine's 1960s paintings were characterised by a strong emphasis on clothing and household items. As early as 1964, he leveraged an image of a men's robe, lifted from a newspaper ad, and used it as a recurring theme for his self-portraits.

About the artist

Jim Dine, a prominent American artist, has left his mark in a myriad of artistic fields over the last 40 years. He has demonstrated his mastery in painting, performance art, drawing, poetry, printmaking, book design, sculpture, photography, and more. Recognised as one of America's finest living artists, Dine is known for his intricate depictions of tools, large nudes, self-portraits, and studies of nature and antiquity.

Born in Cincinnati in 1935, Dine was just twelve when his mother died. He spent his youth in his grandfather's hardware store, cultivating a deep appreciation for hand tools that would later become a recurring theme in his work.

Dine's popularity exploded in the 1960s, when he was identified with pop art, though he always maintained a focus on inner essence. Even as he moved towards life drawing in the mid-'70s, drawing remained central to Dine's artistic expression.
