About this artwork

John Constable was a British painter who changed the game in the field of landscape art with his portrayals of Dedham Vale. This place is near his house, situated on the border of Essex-Suffolk in eastern England. In 1817, Constable made a sketch of Dedham Mill, a property his father owned and ran. This sketch is one of the most stunning and deservedly well-known works of the artist.

About the artist

John Constable , 1776-1837, was an English Romantic painter known for his landscape paintings of the English countryside. He was a major influence in the development of the English landscape school and was one of the first painters to depict nature realistically. Constable was born in Suffolk and studied at the Royal Academy in London. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1829. Constable's works are held in many public collections, including the Tate Gallery in London.
