About this artwork

'The Skiff' is a piece of art that beautifully captures a sunlit moment on the river Seine, including several elements that are commonly found in impressionist art, such as a stylishly dressed woman, a boat being rowed, and a steam train crossing a bridge. The subjects chosen by Pierre Auguste Renoir are distinctively impressionist, and so are his painting methods, where he applies vibrant, unmixed paint directly from the tube using expressive brushstrokes. This print has been colour matched to the original artwork and has been given the thumbs up by the National Gallery. Every purchase contributes towards the operations of the museum.

About the artist

Pierre Auguste Renoir (25 February 1841 – 3 December 1919) was a French Impressionist painter who was a leading figure in the development of the movement. He was one of the most prolific and influential painters of the 19th century, and his works are characterised by their vibrant light and saturated colour. Renoir was born in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, and studied art in Paris. He was a close friend of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, and his works are often compared to those of the other Impressionists. Renoir was also a prolific sculptor, and his works are found in many public collections. He was married twice and had seven children, four of whom became painters.
