About this artwork

This excellent print originates from a hand-colored engraved plate titled 'Lacerta chamaeleon', which is a part of 'Cimelia Physica. Figures of rare and curious quadrupeds, birds, etc., alongside some of the most exquisite plants.' John Frederick Miller was the one who coloured and engraved from the subjects themselves. George Shaw was responsible for the descriptions. This collection first saw the light of day in 1796, presenting a unique combination of previously released plates and descriptions.

About the artist

Known as Johann Sebastian Müller, John Miller (1715–c.1792) was a botanist and engraver originally from Germany. He began his career after training with Johann Christoph Weigel in Nuremberg and relocated to England in 1744 along with his sibling. Initially, his works were signed as J. S. Müller or J. S. Miller, switching to John Miller after 1760. Miller's works significantly contributed to making Carl Linnaeus' work accessible to English audiences. Collaborative endeavors, such as the 1785's Botanical Tables with John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, were also part of his repertoire. Miller had two marriages and fathered twenty-seven children. Two of his sons, John Frederick Miller and James Müller or Miller, followed in their father's footsteps as illustrators.
