About the artist
Born in 1900 and passing away in 1971, John Tunnard was a notable English Modernist painter and designer. His journey began with design studies at the Royal College of Art between 1919 and 1923, after which he dabbled in textile design till 1929. This was when he discovered his passion for painting. His style began to evolve in the mid-1930s, with abstract works inspired by Paul Klee and Joan Miró. British surrealism then captured his interest after reading Herbert Read's Surrealism, and this was reflected in his pieces that fused architectural and biomorphic shapes with constructivist features. An example is his Self Portrait housed in the National Portrait Gallery in London, where he is depicted with a gigantic insect. Tunnard wasn't just an artist, he also had a keen interest in naturalism.
