About this artwork
The iconic Robert "Nesta" Marley, born on February 6, 1945 and died on May 11, 1981, was a well known singer, musician, and songwriter originally from Jamaica. Recognised as one of the originators of the reggae genre, his musical journey was defined by a unique fusion of reggae, ska, and rocksteady, along with his signature vocal and lyrical style.Marley's influence on music helped to elevate the global recognition of Jamaican music and established him as a worldwide popular culture icon for over a decade. Marley, during his lifetime, was recognised as a symbol of Rastafari, infusing his music with spiritual undertones.He is also widely recognised as a universal emblem of Jamaican culture, music, and identity, and he was known for his bold support of democratic-social reforms. Marley was the subject of an attempted assassination in his home in 1976, believed to be caused by his political stance. He was also a proponent of the legalization of marijuana and a strong advocate for Pan-Africanism.
