About this artwork

Katsushika Hokusai was a well known Japanese artist and printmaker from the Edo era, famous for his expertise in Ukiyo-e. This particular style of Japanese art involves a cooperative printing system where multiple parties - artist, carver, printer, and publisher - each play a specific role. One notable work of Hokusai's is 'Ariwara no Narihira Ason', which forms part of his final single-sheet series known as 'One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse'. For this project, Hokusai drew inspiration from a famous anthology of poems that touched on themes of love and melancholy, titled 'A Hundred Poems by a Hundred Poets'. He opted to narrate these poems through the lens of a fictional elderly nurse.
