About this artwork

Check out this excellent print! It's inspired by a cool illustration of a type of chrysanthemum, called 'Karashishi'. The name might translate to 'Chinese Lion', which is pretty neat. This image is originally from a Japanese book called A Hundred Chrysanthemums by K Hasegawa. And guess what? It was published way back in 1891.

About the artist

An artist from late 19th century Japan, Keika Hasegawa, despite having a commonly female name, was known for his woodblock prints of chrysanthemums, a flower symbolizing the sun, perfection, longevity, and nobility. Each print portrayed a solitary, long-stemmed flower, gracing the pages of the 1893 book "One Hundred Chrysanthemums". Active during the era's closing years, Hasegawa created pattern books for kimono and washi paper, including "Biko Zukan" (1894) and "Kyoka Zuan" (1897).

The chrysanthemum, the Emperor's crest, arrived in Japan from China in the 8th century, leading to vibrant and elegant hybrids over centuries. These exquisite varieties were documented in Hasegawa's book.

Introduced in the 8th century, woodblock printing emerged as a prominent art form in Japan, especially during the Edo Period (1603-1868), with Ukiyo-e being the most well known Japanese woodblock print style.
