About this artwork

'At the seaside' is a classic piece by L.S Lowry. Lowry made a name for himself through his unique depictions of bustling cityscapes in northern England, often filled with his signature 'matchstick men'. Besides his love for urban life, Lowry was also deeply fascinated by the sea and created several pieces featuring seascapes, including this one, where beach-goers are seen having a blast.In this piece, you'll see a bevy of people wading in the ocean and playing in the sand, filling up the foreground. But Lowry also cleverly incorporated a few buildings in the background, serving to break the monotony of this lively scene.

About the artist

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was an English artist known for his urban landscapes of industrial scenes in the North of England. He was a self-taught artist, and his style was a combination of Impressionism and Expressionism. He was influenced by the works of French Impressionists such as Monet and Pissarro, as well as the English artist, William Hogarth. Lowry was a shy and reclusive man, and his works often depicted the loneliness of the industrial city. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1968.
