About this artwork

L.S Lowry, well known for his depictions of bustling industrial scenes in northern England, created the painting 'House on the Moor' in 1950. Lowry is particularly well-known for his use of stylised figures. However, as his career progressed, he began focusing on vast, deserted landscapes, including his bleak depiction of the Derbyshire Moors in this painting. According to Andras Kalman at the Crane Kalman gallery, this artwork encapsulates the essence of Lowry's solitary landscapes. The Lowry has approved a print of this painting, which has been color matched to the original. Proceeds from every sale contribute to the gallery's operations.

About the artist

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was an English artist known for his urban landscapes of industrial scenes in the North of England. He was a self-taught artist, and his style was a combination of Impressionism and Expressionism. He was influenced by the works of French Impressionists such as Monet and Pissarro, as well as the English artist, William Hogarth. Lowry was a shy and reclusive man, and his works often depicted the loneliness of the industrial city. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1968.
