About this artwork

L.S Lowry, the artist behind 'Sailing Boats', completed this piece in 1912. Famous for creating vivid images of bustling cityscapes in Northern England, Lowry's work often features stylised characters, which are commonly called 'matchstick men'. Besides his urban scenes, he was deeply fascinated by the ocean, leading him to create several marine art pieces. This particular artwork offers a moodier representation of the sea, featuring numerous vibrant sailboats struggling against nature's forces.

About the artist

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was an English artist known for his urban landscapes of industrial scenes in the North of England. He was a self-taught artist, and his style was a combination of Impressionism and Expressionism. He was influenced by the works of French Impressionists such as Monet and Pissarro, as well as the English artist, William Hogarth. Lowry was a shy and reclusive man, and his works often depicted the loneliness of the industrial city. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1968.
