About this artwork

L.S Lowry, the famous artist, created 'The Football Match' in 1937. He's popular for his depictions of bustling cityscapes in the northern part of England, teeming with his signature 'matchstick men'. A big fan of football, Lowry used to watch Manchester City games frequently. But, instead of painting one of their massive stadiums like he usually did, this one's all about a neighborhood football game going on right in the middle of the city.

About the artist

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was an English artist known for his urban landscapes of industrial scenes in the North of England. He was a self-taught artist, and his style was a combination of Impressionism and Expressionism. He was influenced by the works of French Impressionists such as Monet and Pissarro, as well as the English artist, William Hogarth. Lowry was a shy and reclusive man, and his works often depicted the loneliness of the industrial city. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1968.
