About this artwork

Lee Krasner called this piece of art 'Gothic Landscape,' a few years after she finished it. She compared the abstract expressionist shapes to a bunch of trees with hefty, twisted roots.

About the artist

Born in Brooklyn, New York on October 27, 1908, Lee Krasner was a well known modernist abstract painter and collage artist, notably known for her 'Little Image' series and 'Milkweed' collage. Her journey in art began in earnest when she was hired by the WPA to paint murals in 1934.

Further refining her skills, Krasner studied under the revered Hans Hoffmann from 1937 to 1940. Her personal life intertwined with her professional when she married fellow artist Jackson Pollock in 1945. Her creativity peaked in the 1950s with the creation of the Night Journey series. Krasner's life and artistic endeavors ceased on June 19, 1984, in New York City. She remains a celebrated figure in the world of abstract art.
