About the artist
M.C. Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. He was a master of illusion and perspective, often creating works that featured impossible constructions and tessellations. Escher was influenced by the Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis, as well as the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi. He was also inspired by the natural world, particularly the landscapes of his native Netherlands. Escher was a lifelong traveler, visiting many countries in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
