About this artwork

Maggi Hambling, a British artist, refined her skills at both the Slade and Camberwell. She's well known for her vivid portrayals of her subjects and the environment. In her self-portrait, she paints herself with triple arms, each clutching three crucial things to her - a paintbrush, a cigarette, and a drink. This portrait also features two other individuals, her lovers during that period. The man depicted next to the tea pot symbolises the one she was emotionally in love with. Meanwhile, the torso in the bottom right corner symbolises the man she had physical attraction towards. Every purchase contributes to the operations of the National Portrait Gallery.

About the artist

Noted for her vibrant and dynamic style, the British painter and sculptor, born in Hadleigh, Suffolk, is best recognised for her intense portraits. Among these, the distinguished chemist Dorothy Hodgkin's 1985 portrait, showcased at the National Portrait Gallery, London, stands out. She has also been known to depict the comedian Max Wall, the mythological Minotaur, and celestial bodies like the sun through her art. She had the honor of being the inaugural artist-in-residence at the National Gallery, London, in 1980-81.

Her repertoire isn't limited to portraits. She's widely acclaimed for her detailed landscapes and seascapes, particularly a well known series of North Sea paintings. The National Portrait Gallery in London houses several of her works. Women too, play a significant role in her portraits, as seen in the commissioned portrait of Professor Dorothy Hodgkin.

Her work can be found in prestigious public collections like the British Museum, the Tate Collection, the National Gallery, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is also known for her post-mortem portraits, including her parents and Henrietta Moraes, which she describes as a therapeutic process.
