About this artwork

Marc Chagall, a Russian-French artist with Jewish roots, was connected to many significant artistic movements of the modern era, creating a diverse portfolio of artwork. Just a few weeks before he married with Bella, his wife, Chagall created 'The Birthday' in 1915. The painting illustrates their deep and intense love - it's as though the couple is floating on cloud nine in a radiant living room. Chagall portrays himself as floating over Bella, craning his neck to plant a kiss on his soon-to-be wife. This quirky interaction is a testament to his early exploration with surrealism, a genre that emphasises the illogical pairing of images to tap into the creative power of the subconscious mind.

UK - £6.90 for unframed items by Royal Mail Special Delivery

About the artist

Marc Chagall , born Moishe Segal (7 July 1887 – 28 March 1985), was a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. He is associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints. Chagall was influenced by Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism, and his works often feature dreamlike, whimsical, and poetic elements. He was married twice and had two children.
